About the Book
When people hear the words, “South Philly”, more than just a cheese steak comes to mind. They might think of row homes, summer softball games, Italian water ice, and strong, traditional families. Or, they might think of crime, violence and gangsters. This last reputation is not unfounded, but within that dark world are men who, although “connected”, are trying to break free from the trappings and limitations of such a life.
BROTHERLY LOVE tells the story of a man, his crew, and just such a journey.
Blaze Santore – an unusual combination of bookie and intellectual, struggles to justify and find meaning in his life when Joey Maletesta, his best friend and champion for self-improvement, comes home to honor a blood oath they had sworn ten years earlier. Blaze is forced to question everything that defines his identity, and through the painstaking process of fulfilling the pact that he made with Joey, reaches his own realization - one that will change his life forever.
About the Author
Max Calder grew up in Philadelphia. An Ivy League education was the norm within his family, so being a strongly rebellious young man, he naturally gravitated toward lessons in dark alley classrooms where his teachers were the shadiest of characters. Many colorful stories were born of those years on the street. Brotherly Love is his first novel.
