About the Book
In 1869, a wagon train of freed slaves heading west, looking for land, is attacked by Indians. Sadie is the only survivor. Black, free, and alone, she is rescued by a Sioux hunting party and taken to Red Cloud’s village on the Powder River. There she meets Pretty Flower, an Indian girl her own age. Pretty Flower’s aunt and uncle adopt Sadie. Sadie and Pretty Flower become good friends and life in Red Cloud’s camp is good until the Blue Coats come. The two girls are separated but meet again unexpectedly. As their lives intertwine, issues of slavery, freedom, and prejudice test their friendship and threaten their survival.
