About the Book

It is the year 1930, and Nellie Florence Haenni has just turned twelve. She lives in a small eastern Idaho community where her world revolves around her loving family. Playing in the creek with her cousin, Jay, and tending two of her younger sisters are just part of her daily activities. Her world changes after helping on her Uncle Sam’s horse farm and watching the birth of a pinto filly out of a prize Morgan mare. She falls in love with the brown and white foal, naming her Aspen just minutes after her birth. But her uncle doesn’t want the foal of a scrub stallion to ruin his farm’s reputation of turning out well-trained, purebred Morgan horses. Then tragedy strikes one of Uncle Sam’s friends and he brings Hans Schori’s two children to live at his farm. Fawn Schori is exactly Nellie’s age, the only other girl her age for miles around. Eager to have a new friend, Nellie is heartbroken when her mother announces Nellie is not to have anything to do with the children who are half Shoshone-Bannock Indians. Can Nellie convince her mother that it is Fawn’s heart that counts, not the color of her skin? And, what of Aspen? Will her uncle get rid of the filly just because her coat is not a solid color like the other horses on his farm?
