About the Book
The Glazes slipped from good jobs and a cozy bungalow to ditch digging and a neighbor’s chicken house while working toward Mother’s blue roof. As thirteen year old Fannie B., next to the eldest of six children, tells the story, “We thought our luck was holding for another year if no one got sick, got laid off, had another baby, or went to jail.” Life’s lessons can be humorous, pitiful, or both, and each one finds his own way to survive. With a father whose payday bottle could make him behave egregiously, it takes a mother with an indomitable spirit to provide hopeful answers.
