About the Book

When I started to write this dissertation, I was not sure what to expect or how it would evolve. It turned out to be fun to write. The more difficult part has been the selection of pictures to be included from the many I had.

As I wrote, I often paused to reminisce about the many fond memories – sometimes with chuckles. My seven years in Asia had countless funny experiences, only a few of which I have mentioned.

I hope whoever reads this, especially my children and grandchildren, will find some of it amusing and informative. If anything, I hope they will see that the “Boomer”, “Boom Boom”, or “Bo Bo”, as my grandchildren call me, set goals and objectives while growing up. I may not have always achieved them, or may have fallen short in some way, but the Malkin tenacity and determination came through. My children will remember the picture of the little red engine chugging up a steep hill saying, “I think I can, I think I can”….and I know I did. One should never give up.

Eleanor Roosevelt’s quote says it better than I: “You gain strength, courage and confidence when you really look fear in the face….you must do the thing you think you cannot do.”
