About the Book

When three year old Emily shares her perspective on separation, divorce, remarriage and blended families within the framework of her “Big Fat Family” you can’t help but appreciate the sometimes black and white nature of a child’s perception. Emily enlightened her Mom, Kim Johnson one day during a car trip and together they recorded a pivotal moment in Emily’s life. At the same time, they offer you and your child the chance to record the transitions that may be happening in your family with a sharing component that encourages your child to think about their family and explore their feelings through words and illustrations to create their own story. “My Big Fat Family” is more than a story to be read it is a story to be shared.

About the Author

Emily O’Connor is a bright and shiny young girl who has it all figured out! Her personal philosophy…”It is what it is!” shines through in her first book “My Big Fat Family”. Emily’s perspective on her parent’s divorce has been developing since she was nine months old. She and her brother divided their time between their mother and father’s separate houses equally for four years. They currently live with their mother but visit with their Dad often. Emily says the best part of having a big fat family is “there is always someone to tuck me in at night and keep me safe.” Emily enjoys chocolate, spa days, swimming and riding her bike (without training wheels) and hopes to be a fashion designer when she grows up. Kim Johnson is first and foremost Shane and Em’s mom. Her extensive experience in the field of Early Childhood education has provided many opportunities to allow children to express their own voice through art, music and dramatic play. In “My Big Fat Family” Kim amplifies her daughter’s voice while giving all children the chance to make sense of their changing environment. According to Kim, “ allowing children to express their feelings using something as tangible as “My Big Fat Family” empowers them to speak up for themselves and share their experiences with the world.” Kim is a Life Strategies Coach, writer and motivational speaker. She is married to Jeffrey and they share their home in New Jersey with their three children and three cats!
