About the Book

Katie At The Bat is a re-write of the classic Casey at the Bat – A Ballad of the Republic Sung in 1888 by Ernest Lawrence Thayer. After more than a century of American lore - telling and retelling the story of Casey’s unforgettable strike out, Katie at the Bat steps to the plate and reverses history. This new heroine is forced to face her fears and put out her best effort, despite her recent hitting slump and the fans’ lack of confidence. Katie’s big moment is compared to challenging circumstances faced by any young person in a stressful situation. In the final tense moments Katie grits her teeth and gives it her best shot. The moral is clear and straight forward - what matters is to believe in yourself and then anything is possible.

Proceeds from the book are being donated to The Katie At The Bat Team – A Non Profit Helping Kids Hit Home Runs In Life. About the Author

When Lisa S. Hoffstein used to read baseball picture books to her two boys, Brian and JJ, she was struck by the fact that the books lacked female characters, most significantly female heroines. One of their favorite stories wasErnest Lawrence Thayer’s legendary Casey At The Bat: A Ballad Of The Republic Sung In The Year 1888. Ms. Hoffstein conceptualized Katie At The Bat when she was pregnant with her daughter Hillary. She wanted a story that would bring a female athlete to the plate and reverse the fate of joyless Mudville, highlighting self-actualization and optimism.
