About the Author

George Long is a commercial photographer having lived and worked in New Orleans since 1974. His photography is on display year-round at George Long Gallery, 4516 Magazine Street, and he invites you to visit. He currently serves as President of the New Orleans/Gulf South Chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) and has been a member of the Professional Photographers of America since 1984. In 2006, George was honored by the International Photographic Council to receive the ASMP/IPC Leadership Award during a ceremony at the United Nations. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, he supported the New Orleans photographic community and his fellow ASMP members by gathering donations of money and photo equipment to replace what was lost in the storm. As well, he helped photographers stay in touch during trying times through an online communication network. It was in 1973 that George began a 14 year career in television production, first as a studio camera operator and 16mm film photographer at KALB-TV in Alexandria, Louisiana and then nearly 13 years at the studios of WWL-TV in New Orleans as floor manager for daily news programs, commercial productions, and live remote broadcasts. While there, he started a part-time photography business called Longshots but by 1990 had decided it was time to create his own future as a full-time photographer shooting primarily for publication. Portfolios of his work are available for viewing online at GeorgeLong.com. George was born in Washington, D.C. His father, Gillis Long, served in the U.S. Congress for 14 years. Upon Gillis’ death in 1985, his mother, Cathy Long, was elected to the office. George lives with his sweetheart, Sarah Hoffpauir, in uptown New Orleans.
