The sea has always challenged the imagination, inviting the adventurer to push beneath the surface to undiscovered areas. From far back in recorded history, natives along the Pacific Northwest Coast reported sightings of giant squid, huge eels, sea serpents and other malevolent creatures, perhaps remnants of a prehistoric era, but until recent times, one species went unpublicized and unnoticed. In the early 1800s, with increasing populations along the Oregon Coast, some residents witnessed unusual activity in the waters offshore Heceta Head. Most of these sightings went unreported but in a few cases, contact led to continued interaction and communication with a previously unknown species.

It has been years since Margaret Rose Lavell disappeared from her coastal community. Now her daughter, Aquenae Magena, has come to live in Florence. Her goals include reunion with her sister, Opalina, and selection as Queen of the annual Rhododendron Festival.

After a gathering of women intent on sending the earthbound spirit of Heceta Head happily to the other side, tragic events interrupt in the Mer world, propelling Magena and Opalina on a dangerous quest. Traveling far from Oregon waters, the sisters survive unimaginable perils in the dark underground tunnels of Central America then drift down river in a dugout canoe through the Amazon rainforest.

After sailing across the Caribbean to the British Virgin Islands, Magena and Opalina return home. Armed with the Crystal Skull and fabled Eyes of Atlantis, the Princess Aquinae Magena must meet the most dangerous challenge of her young life. If she does not succeed, life on the planet will be changed forever.
