About the Author
Gail Sommers Baker grew up in a loving Christian home, with two sisters and a brother as well as lots of family near. She had an aunt who lived in a nursing home, and at a young age, often went with her grandmother to visit. Her parents were both creative people and from them she developed her enjoyment arts, crafts and music. Gail’s parents ran an antique shop, and by helping them she gained an interest and respect for things from the past. She taught herself to play on an antique pump organ, sitting for hours picking out tunes from the hymnal. She studied fine and commercial art at Lamar University in Beaumont. Working as fashion illustrator and advertising director, she gained experience in promoting ideas and motivating people. Later, she designed and created many of the things in her own antique and gift shop. Through her interaction with people she met in her store she learned more about life in the “good old days”. Her attention turned to “antique people”! Gail took a position as an Activity Director for a local nursing home and soon realized that all her life experiences had come to serve as a training course for that vocation. She says “it just seems natural to me to be there”. Experiences in art, music, faith and history; all came together to enable her to better serve the residents there. Her passion is to: bring joy, dignity, purpose and validation to those priceless antiques with whom she works now. That is also the purpose of this book.
