About the Book

The Smarts are a small, close-knit family. Dad goes to work one day and never returns. Mother is distraught and withdrawn, but later, menacing. No one in the new community will talk with the children; they are alienated, except to be warned not to leave the boundaries of the city. Risking whatever dangers lie in the adjoining communities, the children seek their father. They must have answers and leaving this city seems to be the only way to find them. Once outside, the Smart children encounter the most incredible friend they can imagine, and he has been waiting for them. Through him, they learn of their father’s peril, their mother’s transformation, and of their own special abilities. He has the answers for which they have been searching.
