The Agony of the Kemalist Republic and the Rise of a Fascist-Naqshibendi Brotherhood presents, in vivid terms, the slow undoing of all the reforms introduced by the immortal Kemal Atatürk, founder of modern Turkish Republic. Today Turkey is facing a most daunting challenge mounted by a corrupt religious party usurping the police powers at its disposal and aiming to reverse the course of the past eighty years. A sham democracy cannot solve Turkey’s critical problems: in the east, a tribal and feudal society within which abject poverty reigns and in the west, powerful conglomerates with international partnerships dominate the business world. Everywhere an army of unemployed, young and old, is hoping for better days . . . Against great odds, the fight for secular education, for full employment, for women empowerment, and for social justice has to go on.

About the Author

Sedat Sami, Professor Emeritus of Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, is the co-author of a two-volume book (Engineering Mechanics-Statics & Engineering Mechanics-Dynamics). A new version (Mechanics for Engineers - Statics & Mechanics for Engineers-Dynamics) will be published in early 2010. Professor Sami has published numerous refereed articles in a variety of scientific journals and proceedings. Upon retirement he turned his attention to the conditions prevailing in his native country: Turkey. In 2002 (in Turkish) and again in 2006 (in English) he wrote about his beloved land. The second book (Silent Capitulations: The Kemalist Republic under Assault) has been, subsequently translated in Turkish and published in 2008. Prof. Sami has traveled extensively in Turkey, the old Soviet Union, in Asia and throughout Europe. He lives in Southern Illinois.
