"I graduated from the University of Michigan with a BA in History a few years ago and have since been working in the QA department of a top health IT company. While I have enjoyed the work and have gotten great exposure to working for a major corporation, I've hit a point where I want to try something new. I thought an MBA would be the next step so I looked at various MBA programs including Stanford, Michigan, Kellogg, and Northwestern. After reading the Insider's Guide to the Executive MBA, however, I discovered that pursuing an MBA right now would not be particularly wise; the author made a very convincing -- and helpful -- claim that now is not the right time to do so.

I've learned that I need to obtain more critical and practical work experience. There is a quote in the book that sticks with me: ""Unlike a medical or legal career in which you have to earn the degree before practicing medicine or law, it's the opposite in business."" This book shows that you need to bring business successes and failures back to the classroom in order to take full advantage of the coursework and program. While I may not be going to get my MBA anytime soon, this book did help me understand the importance of experience before getting an MBA. I plan to follow this route and will certainly refer to this resource again when ready"
