In A Gaian Paradigm: Speculation on the Future, Bill Ellis warns of a dilemma facing Earth and all its life-forms. The dominator paradigm has persisted for centuries, a hierarchical foundation with the planet, creatures, and resources existing primarily for the use by humankind. This destructiveness is challenged with a new vision of a democracy where we put Gaia (the unity of Earth and life on Earth) before profi t and money. The author calls for transformation of many of our systems, including science, technology, culture, economics, education, governance, food, energy use, and shelter. He weaves the many threads of an Earth/life-centered (Gaian) consciousness into a holistic and meaningful cooperative community for the benefi t of the entire population, not just a few. The reader is shown possibilities for empowering local community self-reliance and sustainability with mutual support and harmony. The book’s goal is “to give others a feel for and a motivation to join in this almost hidden optimistic view of the future and maybe make a difference in the outcome for our world.” It will be a primer for some and an affi rmation for others, but the reader will hear a compassionate human voice inspiring us to do something to save our planet and all life on it.
