About the Book

The book “Three Feet to Now” is about a contemporary American man doing all he can to build a life and to thrive in Post-War America. The narrative of Don Schmedeke’s life is also a narrative of his country since 1946. The biography reveals the character development of a patriot, a Christian, and a man of drive. The experiences and initiatives which form the tapestry of who Don is would not be possible anywhere else on earth because of America’s political and cultural strengths. What’s more, Don Schmedeke and his contemporaries formed the socio-economic backdrop of the period as much as it formed them. What unfolds in the pages of the story is also a history of a nation during an incredible period of prosperity and challenge. It is a quiet tale shared by millions of hard-working men and women trying to navigate the waters of modern middle class anxieties and hopes for the future.

About the Author

Very early in my life it was necessary to learn and develop strict work ethics because of World War ll, and being born on a farm in central Illinois during the war years. The post war years were a bit difficult at times. I did not know the difference because I had not experienced what was called good years. We were happy with what we had. We grew our own food, and had lots of space to play and work. We all loved each other as a farm family, and worked as a team. I was confirmed according to the teachings of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod at the age of 14, and have remained strong in my faith throughout my life. I served in the Illinois National Guard; I felt the need to serve the country I love. It taught me the price of freedom does not come easy. I accomplished all my goals in Illinois at age 40. I graduated from Missouri auction school in Kansas City with the title of colonel and became reserve grand champion auctioneer of the state of Missouri in 1989. I married the love of my life and we have two wonderful children, and now have two wonderful grandchildren. I have served in my church and community in many functions and still do today. Donald E.
