About the Author

“You see those wrinkles? There’s a great story behind every one of them.” Max was born and raised on a farm in west Texas. At an early age he felt the urge to travel, to explore. He attended the University of Texas and received his Masters at Georgia State. Upon graduation from UT he joined the US Air Force. Initial assignments were in Air Defense and Intelligence. Returning from Korea, he graduated from Pilot Training at Reese AFB, Texas. After that he amassed thousands of hours---but lost his hair---flying the C-141 from Macon, GA to Saigon. He was hired by Delta Air Lines in 1972, retiring in 2000. He was invited to join the Explorers Club in 1982, the Royal Geographical Society in 1985, and The Travellers Club in 2005. This book is not about how he set out to change the world, but how the world changed him.
