About the Book

Charlie Johannson looked foreward to retirement upon the completion of his last guide for the Army, but when he returned home, he found his Cheyenne wife and child had been brutally murdered.  Clues for the crime pointed to troopers stationed at Fort Laramie, but they had been reassigned to Custer's expedition to the Black Hills.

Charlie consented to guide the expedition while looking for his wife's killers.  On the trail, he meets an old enemy Crow Eyes, a renegade Hunkpapa, who leads a small band of guerrilla fighters in terrorizing the wagon train.  Charlie's search for the killers leads to a gun smuggling ring connected with drugs and alcohol, and eventually to the killers.

After gold is discovered in the Black Hills, Charlie is picked to carry the news to the outside world via telegraph in Laramie.  This ride leads to a hand-to-hand, death-to-the-death showdown with Crow Eyes.  Charlie, though badly wounded, fights a life and death struggle to succeed in his mission.
