About the Book

What is it like to be poor in ancient Rome? How valuable is the life of a slave? Meet prostitutes who have to sleep with dogs to keep alive at night. Meet a wealthy rat-catcher in his favourite bar. And follow the adventures of Eleutheria, a temple prostitute, brutalised and scared by a vicious client. What does an aging, one-eyed woman do to keep alive? How does it feel to have no choices, no rights, no possessions? In the Roman Republic, hope is still available. Furius 'the Greek', arrives to find that he is expected and welcome.

About the Author

Arty Scott lives in Nottingham UK. with his wife of forty-four years, Sally Elaine. They are partners in everything except literary taste. Sally loves reading a 'good murder' while Arty enjoys listening to Gibbon's Decline and Fall' and writing fiction, of course. As his physical drives diminish, Arty finds creative ideas easier to gestate and amplify. He is sixty-nine years old and Sally is . . . 'much younger'. Both are retired and derive much pleasure from looking after friends' dogs in their home while the friends are on vacation. “The closest we'll get to being grandparents.” they say.
