About the Book
This story takes place in the year 1250. The setting is the fictional village of Marne on the Atlantic coast of Flanders. The tale concerns a woman who has inherited her position as president of the Dyers’ Guild from her husband. The dyers, and other cloyh workers, of this village are contracted to a tyrannical and abusive wool merchant. Since the guild members are forbidden to work for anyone but the merchant contracted to, she decides the only way to be free of him, is to kill him. He is killed before she gets the chance and she must find who did it or the wool trade will cease to exist in her village and the village be abandoned. This would leave the dyers, and others in the town with no means of making a living.
