Memories Of An Adopted Child

As i said previously, my Dad was a miner and had a drink in the local pub with the other men. One sunday afternoon he came home from the pub and had his sunday dinner as it was called in those days, it was never called sunday lunch! After finishing his dinner he went to bed for an afternoon sleep as usual and my Mum started to put some washing "in soak" for the next day. There was a knock at the back door and she went to answer it, there stood my natural mother with me in her arms. Of course my mum knew who she was and the circumstances of my birth but tried not to appear too surprised at this unusual visit. My Mum invited her in and made her welcome as i know she would have. My mother placed me on the settee and excepted a cup of tea. She came straight to the point of her visit ; she told my Mum that the man whos house she was lodging in had come home from the pub and said that he had been talking to my Dad at lunch time, and my Dad had said that he and my Mum had always wanted a child but they had never been luck enough. She explained that she couldnt afford to keep me and asked my Mum if she wanted me. My Mum was an intelligent woman and thought this through carefully, of course she wanted me but was sceptical of my mothers motives. She said that she would only take me if it was done legally and would go to court for me to be adopted. My mother agreed to this and said that she would probably return to Ireland in the future so she would never have anything to do with me or see me. She also agreed that she would never approach me or speak to me in the future. With this agreement my Mum said "yes" and my mother got up to go home. She was leaving me on the settee and Mum said "are you leaving her now"? my mother said "yes". My Mum was flabbergasted as she had nothing for a baby and it was Sunday when all the shops were closed! However she wasnt about to argue and said that was fine.
