A stroll through the garden Easing into the morning, strolling through the lounge or cafeteria to make first contact with the employees (your customers) moving slowly with a plastered smile on your face welcoming any who dare to approach. Most of the time mingling with your employees can be rewarding but it takes some time before you can confidently move through the dangerous waters without being taken down. I was once told; “if you look like your going to be eaten, you will be eaten,” show your perseverance. You must be express altruism, yes, altruism the act of, “disinterested and selfness concern for the well being of others”. If you have elected Human Resources as your professional career you must have a clear combination of altruism and empathy when working with your employees. In recruiting Human Resources professionals, I have always stated, “you can teach someone labor laws but it’s much harder to teach empathy let alone altruism.“ Although, I have a Keurig in my office, I always made an attempt to walk the lounge or cafeteria at least a couple times a day for a hot cup of coffee, it was important I make myself accessible to all employees. Employees feel more comfortable in approaching a manager if they see them exchanging conversation with their fellow co-workers. As everyone knows, if you created an unapproachable management appearance you can forget any open dialogue with your employees. I have also found it easier to share the truth with employees after they have experienced your true nature. For those of you that are new to Human Resources, just remember to be honest and if you can’t share information, just don’t share it. I’ve had to tell plenty of employees, “that information can’t be shared at this time but as soon as I can release it you guys will be the first to know”, the truth what a concept. Also, remember its all in the delivery, this is where your undergraduate psychology classes come in handy, consider your audience and make the delivery as non-confrontational and absolute as possible. Don’t leave yourself open for discussion.

Human Resources Guide to Cultivating Your Personnel Garden is a reference guide intended for human resources professionals in efforts to increase the importance of employees in the workforce. The guide will cover many topics, such as communication methods and styles, understanding the generational difference within your workforce, the importance of the employee evaluation, tips on conducting an ironclad investigation, and protecting your HR department. I’ve been able to apply basic psychology in combination with useful tools acquired in my mental health clinical training in hopes to assist in developing a successful management team. My goal is to educate leaders by defining the wide range of cohort groups within your workforce and introducing new communication methods to exercise throughout your employee’s employment. If adopted, the benefits will be rewarding to the corporation and encouraging employment personal growth. The hope is not just to provide the human resources professionals with insight and ideas but to offer tools to be adopted by the management team.
About the Author
Maxine Wilborn is of a Southern descent and had an early successful career in Federal Contracting to include the Department of Defense contracting, Federal Law Enforcement, Family Advocacy and Military Readiness Programs. While educated as a Psychologist through the University of Maryland continued her Clinical education at Walden University with honors, she has embraced her educational academics in Clinical Mental Health. Utilizing her education in combination with her 20 years of Human Resource expertise, she has made a positive impact in Human Resources as a North American Human Resource Director for several years. She has taken the opportunity to address employment communication issues impacting the current workforce. Married for 30 years to Zachary James, with two children, Russell James and Kacie James and two grandchildren Kamyran and Jake James and last but not least our four legged family member, our Schnauzer (Oscar).
