The Fall of Marek

“Both of you, stay close!” With a war cry, Matthew dashed forward with the bloody bat and began to swing at anything that was too close to him or the girls. They continued on until every last one of them was lying on the ground, dead. Once that was done, they dashed up to the overhang on top of the school; and when they reached the top, they met a sight that made their hearts drop down to the pit of their stomachs: the entire school was overrun with those creatures, in the parking lot where a few of the teachers had tried to flee in their cars and were instead ambushed by them, in the baseball fields behind the school building where the school baseball team was completely overtaken and were nothing more than smears of blood across the once-clean field, and to the infirmary where fallen students rose up and attacked nearby students and the school nurse, bloodying the windows. “W-why . . . ?” Jade fell to her knees as she watched classmates, old friends thrown to the ground and eaten alive as they screamed for help far beneath her. “W-why is this happening to us?” Matthew witnessed their principal running out with several normal students following him to a school bus, but before they got even close to the bus, twice as many creatures suddenly came into view from behind the bus and ripped each of the students’ throats out while the principal desperately tried to save two of them before being taken down as well. Alex lost all strength in her legs and fell to her knees as well, tears falling down her cheeks as she witnessed the same teacher they had met only minutes before trudge slowly across the field and suddenly leaping onto a crying sophomore as she pleaded him to stop until her screams fell silent. “I-i-it was a n-normal day when w-we got here . . .” Matthew turned away and swung the bat at the railings, making them rattle for a few seconds. “How could this have happened over a period of a few hours? We would’ve noticed something if one of our friends suddenly started eating some sophomores!” “W-what are those things . . . ?” Jade, also in tears, shivered against the railings in front of her as her eyes wandered over the hellish sight before them. “You know what they are, Jade . . .” Matthew looked up into the innocent sky with his hair shadowing his eyes. “They wander around, searching for living humans, and when they find one, they bite them, and when they die, they get back onto their feet and start repeating this on anyone with a heartbeat . . . They are dead, and yet their bodies continue to move . . . They’re zombies . . .”
