About the Book

A brief time ago, in a land not unlike this one, there lived a bear named Nod. Bears are compassionate animals, and Nod was a most compassionate bear. Unlike most animals that have some empathy for others, bears have the active desire to alleviate another being’s suffering. Bears express their social altruism in the golden rule, the first rule of bears, “Do for others as you would wish them to do for you.” Not all animals follow the golden rule, but all animals suppose that they do. Over time the golden rule has become the basis of the social and ethical laws by which all animals live. Accordingly, the rule creates an illusion of cooperation and freedom for all where none exists.

About the Author

I was born in Sydney, Australia on April 4, 1960. I grew up in North St. Ives on the edge of the Karangi Chase national park. I went to a small private school set on 13 acres of bushland on the edge on Middle Cove, and finished the Higher School Certificate in 1977. After school, I started work as a Jackeroo on a farm near the NSW QLD border. In 1987, I started at University as a mature age student; and completed a Bachelor of Social Science, Double major in psychology; Graduate Diploma of Counselling, Family counselling; Bachelor of Social Science (Honours), major in Forensic psychology; Master of Social Science (Honours), major children’s reading disorders by Research. In 2004, I started work with the NSW Government. In the second month of my employment, an incident occurred that so shocked and disturbed me that it caused a Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Clinical Depression. I was given anti-depressant medication and counselling, but continued to work until 2012, when on Doctors advice I retired.
