Rivers of North America includes more than 130 rivers and their surrounding environment. More than 250,000 rivers, equaling 3.5 million river-miles, occur in the United States. You could circle the globe 140 times and still not have that many miles under your belt! That’s a whole lot of rivers. Rivers occur in every state and often are the connecting links with our daily lives. Our country is often formed by landscapes that are shaped by rivers. Examples include the Mississippi River which separates the country west and east; the Snake and Columbia rivers provide a similar division in the northwest; the Potomac and Chattahoochee rivers provide significant divisions in the eastern portion of our country. Rivers have shaped human history, including their influence on pre-historic and current history as well as the wildlife that live in the diverse geography. Early explorers followed rivers; human settlements evolved along rivers; our very subsistence today is often tied to rivers.

About the Book
The author retired from the National Park Service after a 32-year career as a park ranger, biologist, and administrator. He worked in seven national parks: Crater Lake, Death Valley, Pinnacles, Zion, Big Bend, Great Smoky Mountains, and the Virgin Islands. He also served as Southwest Region Chief Scientist in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and as Chief of Resource Management and Chief Scientist for the National Park Service in Washington, D.C. Since retirement, he has authored 31 books on the National Parks and wildlife, and two novels: Natural Inclinations, One Man’s Adventures in the Natural World, and Ruins to Ruins, From the Mayan Jungle to the Aztec Metropolis. Ro lives in Bryan, Texas.
