About the Book

I would like to reiterate my firm conviction
that the basic ethos of the Constitution of the United States
and the US Declaration of Independence—
marked by an exceptional emphasis
on individual freedom and liberty and an inherent trust
in the impersonal Almighty—
seems rooted in the Upanishadic doctrine of
the Universality of Spirit,
from which spring such foundational attributes of America
as democracy, human rights, the rule of law,
justice, equality, and freedom.
