About the Book

Set nine years after Dancing With Shadows ( the first book in the series ), this second story is actually a tale within a tale. Emily and Joseph, still living in self induced exile at the Covenant's Costa Rican estate, decide to send their eight year old son, Nede, to spend the summer at Raven's Winter. Emily wants him to hear the stories of her people while within the mystical influence of the old stone mansion and wants him to hear them from Artuer, her grandfather, the aging patriarch of the Winter.

Nede is accompanied by Artuer, his wife Anthrea, and the new heiress apparent to the stewardship of the Winter, Shareena Kent, on his journey to the old estate in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Shareena shows him the many wonders and joys of Raven's Winter and its grounds by day, and each evening Artuer weaves the tale of Sechel and Clairon and their quest to reunite the two dragons, Dred Colb and Dred Gryll.

Shareena and one of the teenagers spending the summer at the estate, Bascatow Brighteye, find their abilities for certain magical talents growing. As Artuer tells the tale of the two dragons over a period of five nights, and as Shareena becomes more attached to Nede, the influence of the sidhe    ( the faery kind ) also begins to return to the old mansion.

Bascatow and his girlfriend, Minnia Echroe, spend much of their time together in "covert" rendezvous while Nede becomes infatuated with one of the other teens, Tina O'Conner.

In the tale, Sechel, son of Sech, late of the Tuatha De Danann, and his new found partner, Clairon D'Artagan, are sent on a quest to create a haven for all those weary of the violence and brutality of the human race. First inspired when asleep within an old bear skin cloak, Sechel is further prodded toward his goal by a mysterious messenger from Tir Tairngire, a raven sent as a representative of the sidhe.

As he and Clairon travel north to the great forest they encounter wolves who are not wolves, pixies, and the first of the two great serpents, Dred Colb. Given the escort of some of Dred Colb's warrior wolves, the pair continues north in hopes of convincing Dred Gryll to give up her hatred of human kind and by so doing reuniting the two beasts and getting the dragons' blessings to build  a refuge at the border of their territories.

They are confronted first by the Valkyries; the shape shifting, empty eyed minions of the Dark. Then they are confronted by the Dark itself. The conclusion of the tale reveals the true purpose of the Covenant and its secret of longevity.

Magic past and present, subtle yet effective, weaves throughout as the stories blend gracefully to their conclusions. Soft as a warm summer day, it will leave also the cold chill threat of darker days to come, as wishes are fulfilled from the most unexpected places and secrets from ancient mysteries are revealed.
