About the Book

INTRODUCTION

Generally, literature deals with life and the people in it. It is an experience covering all facets of human existence. In some schools of thought, literature is seen as the mirror of life because it does not only seek meanings to several phenomena of life but pictures life itself to motivate people in diverse communities. In others’ view, it is a medium that reflects the good and the bad sides of life and, in most cases it exposes the evils of this world.

Literature has been referred to as the body of all writings that relate to a particular subject. For instance, we have medical talk of artistic or creative literature, which deals with those writers who write about the thoughts and feelings of people and societies for the purpose of seeing such people and societies more clearly.

For more elaboration, literature is both a spoken and written medium, which utilizes these elements: plots, setting, language, character, style. In verses, it uses: imagery, rhyme, rhythm, metre e.t.c. As a study, it comprises headings such as: Poetry, Prose and Drama.

Our focus is on poetry, which makes use of verses and employs more of figures of speech. It is an aspect of literature that economizes words, yet displays aesthetic and elegant expressions. Having figures of speech as the corner stones, poetry remains the best way to embellish or flower expressions. There-by making such expressions more appealing to hearing and increases their admiration for pleasantry. For example, an ordinary man may appreciate his wife saying: “My wife is beautiful.” But the statement above is common; it sounds just the way several others who are non literature students will casually appreciate the beauty of their wives. This however lacks flowers of expression compared to someone who appreciates same beauty in his wife this way:

          Looking around, there are people;

          Who are as graceful as silk,

          Like the rosy flower;

          Blazing radiantly to entice, I know.

          But a unique message is inscribed on you;

          Your appearance is radiant:

          Your look to me is magnetic,

          Gripping the man in me.

          Your eyes as fitly set as doves’.

          Your legs, like costly royal alignments,

          Set upon bases of gold.

          And your speech, most silvery.

          All together, you are desirably made;

          Specially made to attract me.”

These verses convey deeper meaning than the first trite statement. No doubt, the wife in question here will feel more proud having someone to paint her beauty in such a charming manner. Hence, this little book singled out for enlightenment, fun, humour and, for lessons. Enjoy it.
