About the Book
In The Amulet, by Brigitte R. Fadhli, a small archaeological team from Colorado combs the remains of a palace in Nineveh, in ancient Assyria. According to legend, the god Assur gave the king a small box containing a sliver of the sun, the wisdom of the universe inscribed upon its surface. One member of the team, however, encounters something even more fantastic. Jenny, who reluctantly joined the expedition to pacify her father, who was frustrated with her immersion into 1960s college culture, experiences strange visions and even stranger situations that hurl her to another age, another life. She is haunted by memories of a life that could not possibly be hers, as her native Iraqi teacher, Hamid, tries to allay her fears. The Amulet is an engrossing novel that transports the reader to 1970s Iraq, surrounded by myths and legends, history and facts, and a sense of convincing reality on Jenny’s journey toward self-discovery and the Wisdom of the Universe.
