About the Book

This book explores Southern history, and more importantly the history of Augusta, through one of the Southeast’s most historically renowned lakes, Lake Olmstead. Created as a byproduct of the Augusta Canal’s enlargement of 1873, the beautiful 100-acre lake was once known for its placid sheets of water and the social venues built upon its shores. . . . Although the glorious lake side clubs and recreational facilities have long since vanished, the allure and rich history of the lake holds fast. Today, its waters are polluted and filled with trash. . . . Respect and pride for Augusta’s “forgotten gem” has eluded the community, due in part to the lack of awareness as to its history and significance. This book affords a clearly painted picture of how Lake Olmstead went from being one of the most heralded places in Augusta, to being merely a “forgotten gem” of its once beloved community. It is intended to raise awareness on both the currently wasted potential of the lake, as well as the amount of respect her rich history warrants.
