About the Book

The Nerd (Blade) is a “bad” kid. He shoots at an enemy, but misses. “Nerd” shoots again. His parents call the police, and you may guess what happened next. His grandmother, Manie, encourages him to do better. “Be my ‘sweet baby’, she says. You are always playing tricks on grandmommy, and I understand. Some people may not.” The ned says, “’Aw, Ma,’ Please don’t spoil my fun.” Aunt Dee, Manie’s, “Big Sister,” and the nerd’s aunt, laugh about this incident and how he had called her “Ma.” Blade thinks it a perfect word for his grandmommy today. The Nerd thinks his grandmommy is unreasonable. She is always using big words. “Blade Buckner, You come here this minute. You have a propensity for trickery.” Blade does not understand the word “propensity.” “Big words can be broken up for you, Blade.” You talk about ‘nerds.’ What does that mean? With help, little minds can understand, Blade.” “Maybe,” said Blade. Then, Blade thinks maybe he cannot have fun all the time. “Be good, says grandmommy. Grandmommy knows that you will. Remember, the Bible says, “…God is a very present help in times of trouble.” He will always aid you.” Blade likes sprint cars. He asks for one for his Dad’s birthday. Grandmommy understands “all” about this.
