About the Author

Sam Barber has researched cemeteries now for over fifteen years, starting with the Greenwood Cemetery in New Bern, North Carolina, where his second cousin John Thomas “JT” Barber of West Street High School fame is interred. He is the ninth and last of thirteen children born to his share-cropping parents and Rosenwald-trained schooling, Augustus Barber Sr. and Celia Ann Brown Barber of Trenton, North Carolina. He graduated from Trenton High School, Howard University, Roosevelt University, and has a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. Sam was an educator in the Greene County (North Carolina) Public Schools, Chicago Public Schools, Cincinnati Public Schools, The Ohio State University, North Carolina A&T State University, and Pitt County (North Carolina) Public Schools. He retired in 1996. His main religious activities include his lifelong home church, Hill’s Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Trenton; Brown Chapel AME Church, Cincinnati; Sycamore Hill Missionary Baptist Church, St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church, Phillip -Simpson Missionary Baptist Church, Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church, St. Peters Missionary Baptist Church, all of Greenville, North Carolina and the Hayes Chapel Missionary Baptist Church of Pactolus and the Anderson Chapel AME Church in Chicod, North Carolina. Sam is the author of A Journey to Purchasing and Naming The Brown Hill Cemetery (2015), Section “A” of the Haiti Cemetery (2021) and co-author with Dr. Timothy Collins of Go Down Moses: The Wings Over Jordan Choir (2021) with a forward by Louise Toppin, Professor of Music, (Voice) University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance. He is also the author of Challenges to Producing a Wings Over Jordan Choir Documentary (2022); The Negro Hour: The Precursor to the Wings Over Jordan Choir (2022); and Wings Over Jordan: Press Coverage and Critical Comments, 1938–1942 ( 2022) He is the author of Selected Obituaries, a work in progress (2025). He is divorced from Margaret Walker of Cincinnati, Ohio. No children were born from this union.
