About the Book
Christian II, King of Denmark and Norway in the 16th century, is determined to secure the crown of Sweden despite vigorous resistance by many Swedes. Huge tax revenues are required to finance Christian’s costly war. Orm Eriksson, a judge, protests the high taxes. The struggle in Sweden goes badly for Christian and he needs to raise more revenue for arms. He seeks financial assistance from a relative but is refused. Christian is furious toward tax protesters and one of them is hanged. A similar fate threatens the other, Orm Eriksson. A strong leader of independence in Sweden leads his forces against those of Christian’s invading army and navy. In Denmark and Norway, courageous men defy the royal head of state and ultimately bring him down. The defiance of these men and many others bring to end the rule of Christian II.
