About the Book
Lars Helland, youthful captain of a small sloop carrying Norwegian emigrants across the Atlantic in 1825, is attracted to a vivacious, young passenger, Rakel. At times, violent storms endanger all aboard the sloop, severely challenging the captain as he seeks to protect his frightened passengers from disaster. The adventuresome passengers gamble that they can safely cross the huge ocean in a tiny sloop, settle in America on raw land, build homes and farm successfully. Captain Lars has a very different vision of the life he seeks in America. As a seafaring man, Lars wants to continue in the maritime field and hopes Rakel will become his wife.
